The new 8th gen Intel Coffee Lake chips for desktop PCs have been released today. As my overclocked 3rd gen i5-3570k has done sterling work for the last 5+ years, I think it's time to upgrade. I was going to get the i5, but bollocks to it, I might just get the i7-8700k instead Initial reports are that it's pretty good, running 4.7GHz out the box and with 6 cores, 12 threads, if running a little hot (so the cooling thread is quite relevant) Anyone else looking to upgrade to it?

My new one has a i7 7700, but I have no idea what that means . Really glad I updated mine and still smile when I switch it on as its so bloody quick. Will definitely look at VR as and when that becomes available and suitable for racing

That looks like it could be a drop in replacement for my i7-6700k if I ever needed to replace it? Edited to add - Apparently not, as it may need a different motherboard to what I currently have.

Yep, unfortunately the new chips won’t work with the Z270 chipset, so you’d need a new Z370 motherboard

Is there any advantage of running 64Gb memory over 32Gb in Windows 10 for gaming, photo editing and video editing? Will it make a worthwhile difference?

You'd have to require quite a few apps open to use 64Gb I have 32Gb and I've never thought I don't have enough.

My CPU package temperatures have been getting progressively higher recently, so I have decided to remove the IHS and replace the thermal compound in the CPU. It does not look too bad to do on an i7-6700k. I am hoping for at least a 10 degree temp drop, but more would be nice.
I will also fit a temperature sensor in my water loop and run the fans from the loop temperature, rather than the CPU temperature which can spike quickly. This should make the PC operate quieter, as the fans are pretty annoying as they ramp up and down all of the time at the moment.

Temp sensor fitted, so the majority of the fans run off the water temperature. The quiet fans on the 280mm slim radiator in the roof of the case, are controlled by the CPU, as is the water pump.
I have also redone my overclock to get my temperatures below 80 degrees C, and have managed a rock steady 4.6GHz.
