I need to replace my mobo, so may as well replace the CPU whilst I am at it.
I am thinking of the Asus Prime Z390-P as I don’t want RGB, with an i7-9700KF. The i9-9900KF would be nice, but I can’t justify the extra cost.
I am going intel so I don’t need to replace my CPU water block. Later, I will have to look at upgrading my graphics, but I don’t want to spend the cash on that just yet.

What do you currently have?
Replacement: Are you prepared to spend on new RAM as a potential motherboard change could require new memory?

Asus Z-170 Pro i7-6700k 32Gb DDR4
To be honest, if I cold get another decent Z170 motherboard, it would be fine. It runs rFactor etc. with no issues.

7th generation, unfortunately. I have found a second hand Z170 Pro gaming with an i7-6700k for €300, but it seems expensive. I am tempted to offer a low price to see if he will accept it.
My concern with upgrading the Mobo and CPU is the graphics card bottlenecking.

Every system will have a bottleneck. If it's the GPU then don't worry about it. It can be the next thing that you save up for another year.

What do you think of the Gigabyte Auros Z390 Pro?

Nice looking board. Obviously more money that the ASUS but it's more features. Slightly better spec. Has your RGB LED header Better Audio onboard, so if you don't have a dedicated sound card this one is better. Gigabyte are perfectly OK as a mobo manufacturer.

Just ordered a Z390 Aorus Master (found a damaged box one on Amazon for a nice discount) and an i7-9700k. Bring on the RGB.... Edit: Just changed the order to a Pro, as I don’t see the need for the extra bits the Master gives.

Delivery Wednesday. Should be up and running Wednesday night, hopefully. As my PC is goosed, I decided to pop the top off and have a look at the TIM. It was pretty dry. That may have been a factor in things?

As we are both working from home, I have squatters rights....
Anyway, PC is built, with a daft amount of fans all running slowly. After a quick 15 minute stress test, running all 8 cores at 4.7GHz, maximum temperature seen was 59 degrees, average 51 from an idle temperature of 31 degrees C. I am happy with that. The PC is running nice and quietly, which is an added bonus.
I think that my i7-6700k definitely had issues with the thermal compound. The results above are what I should have had before.
